Electrostriction in elastic dielectrics undergoing large deformation

چکیده
We develop a thermodynamic model of electrostriction for elastic dielectrics capable of large deformation. The model reproduces the classical equations of state for dielectrics at small deformation, but shows that some electrostrictive effects negligible at small deformation may become pronounced at large deformation. The model is then specialized to account for recent experiments with an elastomer, where the electric displacement is linear in the electric field when the strain of the elastomer is held fixed, but the permittivity changes appreciably when the strain changes. Our model couples this quasilinear dielectric behavior with nonlinear elastic behavior. We explore the consequence of the model by deriving conditions under which the deformation-dependent permittivity suppresses electromechanical instability. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. A Corotational Elastic Constitiutive Model and its Application to the Analysis of a Large Deformation Closed Cycle
In this paper, an elastic constitutive model based on the Eulerian corotational rate of the logarithmic strain tensor is proposed. Using this model, the large deformation of a closed cycle containing tension, shear, compression and inverse shear is analyzed. Since the deformation path includes a closed cycle and the material is considered as an isotropic elastic material, the normal and shear c...

متن کاملTuning of whispering gallery modes of spherical resonators using an external electric field.
In this paper we investigate the electrostriction effect on the whispering gallery modes (WGM) of polymeric microspheres and the feasibility of a WGM-based microsensor for electric field measurement. The electrostriction is the elastic deformation (strain) of a dielectric material under the force exerted by an electrostatic field. The deformation is accompanied by mechanical stress which pertur...
متن کاملModeling viscoelastic dielectrics
Dielectric elastomers, as an important category of electroactive polymers, are known to have viscoelastic properties that strongly affect their dynamic performance and limit their applications. Very few models accounting for the effects of both electrostatics and viscoelasticity exist in the literature, and even fewer are capable of making reliable predictions under general loads and constraint...

Widely used as insulators, capacitors, and transducers in daily life, soft dielectrics based on polymers and polymeric gels play important roles in modern electrified society. Owning to their mechanical compliance, soft dielectrics subject to voltages frequently undergo large deformation and mechanical instabilities. The deformation and instabilities can lead to detrimental failures in some app...
